Hope

My friend hopes to move to Australia and work at an excellent school that is progressive, secular and innovative.

Community is important and she wants an environment where intellectual, artistic and technological pursuits are nurtured; this school will genuinely value the individual living a socially conscious, creative life . She does not want ‘a factory’ approach where bells jar and children shuffle from one lesson to the next, with little continuity or connection to their learning. The students should be encouraged to pursue their own projects and interests, wherever feasible. She is not much interested in a narrow focus on literacy and numeracy or traditional notions of exam-based success.

Her hope is that the school is filled with tech savvy educators living contemporary lives. She  wants philosophy, literature and history to be particularly valued and encouraged. She hopes that science, especially environmental science, is taught practically with students engaging in authentic learning experiences. It is important that teachers having a great deal of professional freedom to do ‘whatever it takes’ to engage teenagers in positive learning experiences. The physical environment needs to be contemporary and conducive to learning.

She wants her children to attend such a school, even if she cannot work there straight away.

Dapto High School aspires to these fine ideals; we have some in place and are making progresson others.

Korowal School in the Blue Mountains is the closest I know of.
