“Sharpness is a bourgeois concept”    Henri Cartier-Bresson

I always enjoy using Lee Filters, especially the Big Stopper on my X100SSince upgrading to the X100T I have had limited time to experiment but am enjoying my new Little Stopper and have been stacking these two neutral density filters for 16 stops of goodness.

The featured image above, shot at Bombo Beach, is a case in point. It is a 3 minute exposure at f/8 taken in very bright sunlight. My setup for the shot can be seen below; a trusty Joby Gorillapod with shutter release and the two neutral density filters in place using the Seven5 Micro System.

The same shot, employing just the Little Stopper, for less than 3.7 seconds at f/8, gives a very different effect. It has been tweaked in Adobe Lightroom.

This next shot also uses the Little Stopper at dawn to shoot straight into the sun at f/16 for 8 seconds. I have employed a Topaz plugin to create a painterly effect.

The next image is shot at f/8 for 1.7 seconds and a light vignette added in Lightroom after work in Topaz. It will appear, I suspect, a little underexposed for some tastes.

Future plans

I have been relying on Lightroom and plugins too much.

My plans for future shots are to see what I can capture straight out of the camera. This shot below has not been edited, other than it was uploaded as a .DNG, rather than a .RAF file to Lightoom and converted to black & white without tweaking. It was shot at f/16 for 6 seconds.

In the morning I plan to see what I can capture, weather permitting, just with my filters and X100T. Wish me luck!

    Darcy,
Thanks for this useful post. I’ve had my eye on the Seven5 system for a while. Your description and illustrating photographs are a big help in seeing how it would work with my compact camera (also a Fuju).

More importantly thank you for the resulting photographs. I enjoy your composition and the result is so good. I hope you print — these are begging to be on a wall.

I also note your comment about getting more right in camera. I hope you let us know how this goes. I’m on a similar mission.

    Thanks agan,
    Stephen

      Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I’d endorse the Lee system you are considering and also have the SW-150 for my 14-24mm (+ the adaptor for my other Nikon lenses) http://www.darcymoore.net/2013/08/08/lee-filters-on-my-14-24mm-nikkor/. I will ping you when I have some decent, unedited shots, with any of these filters and cameras.
