Red room

The Red Room Company created a quality learning experience for our students this month with the first two of an ongoing series of workshops. The ‘quality’ and ‘experience’ really does need to be emphasised as the pedagogy employed by our poets – Candy, Lorin and Tamryn – was superbly physical, reflective and high energy, engaging students with the metalanguage of poetry to assist them write, as well as perform. The pacing of the workshop and the clever way all students were made to feel comfortable and creative, before they performed, was a joy to behold. There was a great vibe in the space.

The kids laughed, had fun and were challenged. They responded brilliantly well, composing fine poetry to share. You can read their published, very creative efforts at the Red Room Company website here. For some students it is the first poetry they have ever really written and it is very exciting to see it published online. The great thing is that the students can continue to share poetry with the Red Room Company via our Edmodo sharing group until more poets perform at our school in early 2014.

Transform the world around you with new poems by some of Australia’s finest poets, who’ve created a poetic map charting traces, fragmentary histories, impressions and memories.

The company has a large number of creative, inspiring projects to appreciate and I highly recommend you explore The Disappearing (free app) for iPhone, iPad and smartphones that (literally) maps poetry and place. Hundreds of poets have submitted hundreds of poems, mapping the entire country with their poetry. Users can upload their own poems to The Disappearing, preserving ideas, emotions and experiences about their own environment that vanish over time.

If you would like to have The Red Room Company work with your students (or community) you can contact them here. I highly recommend that you do.

  1. How absolutely fabulous, inspiring and heart warming. Blessed be to all involved, and thank you for renewing my faith that Poetry is a valid and valuable way to express those, at times confusing, conflicting thoughts that haunt us all from time to time. A valid and worthwhile belief that what you have to say/share is exactly that ‘worthwhile’ and to have such wonderful expressive, giving poets there to share with these young people their stories, their way of ‘getting through’ and guiding, not directing, suggesting, not telling, is a plus, plus.

  2. I heart the Red Room Company. Not only because their work is fabulous, but because running one of their projects in my school renewed my own love of poetry and gave me a lot of confidence as a poetry teacher.

PS. I have created a website to store my poetry teaching resources on, and hope to add more to it over the holiday:http://poetryteacher.weebly.com/
