Just when I was beginning to like the idea of our digital world I go and watch this!

Fear one: we forget there’s a real world beyond the virtual. Do we really need to receive an image of a blue sky in order to remind us to go outside?

Fear two: access to credible information becomes more restricted, not less. It is not unthinkable given the state of news journalism around the world today that known news agencies, such as the NYT, go offline and publish a newsletter with a high fee that circulates amongst the few. Of course, there are many online news sources that have credibility and who says because it’s in print it’s fact, etc. But due to demands of speed and monopoly of supply, the web has enormous potential to tangle the truth, or to strain it.

Fear three: protection of voluntary privacy.

Breathe… Digital technology makes things happen so fast – SO fast – could we be changing more than we bargain for, but not realise it till it’s too late? Proceed with caution sticker? Anyone?

Oh, proceeding with caution is advisable. However, you are right, it is the speed of change that will make that challenging, regardless of what anybody says, to actually do.

The fourth estate have played an important role in keeping society in balance. ‘Journalists’ and other interpreters of events will still have to do the intellectual work of understanding what the flow of information actually ‘means’. Once again, the pace and the amount of data/information, may make that difficult to do (at the speed required).

This will be the real challenge – making sense of it all.

I agree. BTW your blog is fantastic! I can’t remember now how I stumbled across it but I am glad I did. I am a pre-service teacher (with a previous life) further up the NSW coast. I find your posts a great source of current information and generally really thought provoking – thank you!
